Discount Calculator
Calculate how much you save and the final price after a discount — including stacked discounts.
How this calculator works
- Enter the original price and the discount percentage.
- The calculator multiplies the price by the discount rate to find the amount saved, then subtracts it from the price.
- Optionally add a second discount to see it applied to the already-discounted price, not the original.
This calculator finds the discount amount and final sale price from an original price and a percentage off. It also supports a second, stacked discount — like an extra 10% off an already-reduced price — which is common during clearance sales and doesn't work the way most people assume.
Example
A $100 item at 20% off saves $20, for a final price of $80. Adding a second 10% discount applies to that $80, saving another $8, for a final price of $72 — not $70, because stacked discounts compound rather than add.
Limitations
This does not include sales tax — use the Discount + Tax Calculator if you need the final price including tax.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a discount?
Multiply the original price by the discount percentage (as a decimal) to get the amount saved, then subtract that from the original price for the final price.
Do two discounts add up, like 20% + 10% = 30% off?
No — stacked discounts compound. 20% off then 10% off equals a combined 28% off, not 30%, because the second discount applies to the already-reduced price.
How do I calculate the original price from a sale price?
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount as a decimal). For example, $80 at 20% off means the original price was $80 ÷ 0.8 = $100.
Does this include tax?
No — use the Discount + Tax Calculator to see the final price with both a discount and sales tax applied.
